VOLGA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The Volga United Methodist Church is 170 years old this year! Part of our celebration will be to include a bit of the history of the church in the newsletter each month. These will be taken from the United Methodist Memoirs and Morsels, our UMW cookbook.
Continued: “An Irish lay preacher, Philip Embury, came to America in 1760 and began preaching in New York City in 1766. About this time, Robert Strawbridge organized a Methodist “class” in Maryland. Now, one hundred years later, the Volga City M.E. Church was finished. The total cost of the building and furnishings was $1,588.65. It was dedicated to the service of Almighty God January 21, 1866, with the Rev. Dr. A.J. Kynett officiating, assisted by Professor Wm. Brush of Upper Iowa University. Dr. Kynett was corresponding secretary of the Upper Iowa Conference Board and one of the original members of the Upper Iowa Conference. In the early 1860s, prompted by the financial embarrassment that had overtaken many churches, Dr. Kynett developed the church extension society, first in the Upper Iowa Conference and then at the General Conference Board in Philadelphia where he was corresponding secretary until his death in 1899. Dr. Kynett, the founder and for thirty-two years the builder of church extension in Methodism, was probably the most distinguished Methodist to ever be in Volga City, Iowa. All faithful students of Methodism have to study his program for church extension.
The Annual Conference was held in Independence in September 1869. The Rev. B. F. Taylor was assigned to the Elkader Circuit. One of the first things he did was build a new barn at the parsonage in Elkader for his horses.” (To be continued)

Please try it out! Go to http:sundaystreams.com/go/volgaumc
You may also go to our website: http:volgaumc.org where the Sunday worship service may also be seen live. Additionally, we have a Roku Channel under Volga United Methodist Church where all of the above may be viewed.
Our Sunday services begin at 9:00 a.m. central time if you want to join in for the live stream. This website will also allow you to view the service at a later date.

What an evening we had! Four of us attended the Bishop’s Vision for 2032 meeting in Waterloo on November 19th. In the midst of her presentation, she talked about forward thinking churches and lifted up our church, the Volga UMC! How excited we were to hear her talk about our livestreaming as a vision for the future. Later that night, the Bishop posted the photo below on Facebook with a caption saying: Four members of Volga UMC attended the Northeast District gathering tonight. They were recognized as one of only two churches on the district that livestream their Sunday service. But there is more! The village of Volga has a population of only 200, with 46 members and an average of 15 in worship. 15 – 20 more households watch the livestream as well as people from England, Ireland, and Russia. When it comes to the work of God, there is no such thing as little! Thank you, Volga UMC!

For Pastor Dennis, his family and the ministries of our churches.
For Nancy and Neal VanHorn’s son Matt.
For all our farmers struggling to bring in the harvest.

To Glenna Whitford for hosting and preparing a delicious meal for the UMW November meeting.
To Alice Miller for hosting the annual UMW Christmas lunch.

As always, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please talk with Pastor Dennis or contact a member of the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee.
