January 2020

Happy New Year! The Volga United Methodist Church is 171 years old this year! Part of our continuing celebration will be to include a bit of the history of the church in the newsletter each month. These will be taken from the United Methodist Memoirs and Morsels, our UMW cookbook.
Continued: 1870: “Through the kindness and perseverance of Elder Taylor, the “Ladies’ Sociable” was organized, constitution and by-laws adopted, and officers elected. The preamble of their constitution read: “We, the members and friends of the M.E. Church of Volga City, wishing to unite our interests for the promotion of benevolence, and the cultivation of friendship, adopt the following constitution.” Officers elected were: president, Mrs. P.B. Hills; vice-president, Mrs. Melissa White; secretary, Mrs. Lucy Penfield; treasurer, Mrs. Mary Drake. The executive committee included Mrs. J.E. Smith, Mrs. Mary Fitch, Mrs. Fred Askew, Mrs. L. Goodwin and Mrs. E. Arnold. The membership fee was 25 cents annually and an admittance fee of one dime to all who attended a meeting. The meetings were to be regular on Wednesday evening each alternate week. The first object of the “Sociable” was to raise funds to purchase a suitable bell for the church.
The Volga Sabbath School had a Christmas tree. Some forty or fifty dollars was raised and presents were ordered for these school children. This 1870 Christmas event was the first one recorded.” (To be continued)

We’re Live Streaming Our Worship Services!
Every Sunday, barring unforeseen circumstances, we’re now live-streaming our worship services! We have been live streaming for the past few months and, in addition to Iowa we have viewers in 15 different states and 3 countries. This is a new outreach program for the Volga UMC. It gives us the ability to get the word out to those who cannot attend services for one reason or another. Tell your family, friends and neighbors!
Please try it out! Go to https://boxcast.tv/channel/b0az2faqe5euikbng642 Sunday Streams was acquired by BoxCast recently and this change allows us to be viewed on FaceBook and YouTube, as well.
You may also go to our website: http:volgaumc.org where the Sunday worship service may also be seen live. Additionally, we have a Roku Channel under Volga United Methodist Church where all of the above may be viewed.
Our Sunday services begin at 9:00 a.m. central standard time if you want to join in for the live stream. This website will also allow you to view the service at a later date.
We are in the early stages of live streaming. It will be helpful if you let us know what you think. We’re always open to suggestions that will make these services better for you. Send an email to volgaumc@gmail.com.

In December we took a Christmas holiday and did not have an Administrative Council meeting. The next meeting will be held on January 19th at 5:45 pm.

UMW Update
Our first meeting of the new decade will be January 8th at Elaine’s home. We will plan our 2020 agenda so bring your ideas!

Saturday, January 11th from 2:30 to 4:00 PM our Bishop will hold another VISION 2032 as a follow up to the initial meetings last November where ideas from all across our Conference were solicited to see where our future as a church might take us. We will hear the results from those initial meetings and continue discussions. The meeting will be held at First UMC, Cedar Falls.
Just a reminder, here’s one of the things that happened at the November meeting for our District:
What an evening we had! Four of us attended the Bishop’s Vision for 2032 meeting in Waterloo on November 19th. In the midst of her presentation, she talked about forward thinking churches and lifted up our church, the Volga UMC! How excited we were to hear her talk about our livestreaming as a vision for the future. Later that night, the Bishop posted the photo below on Facebook with a caption saying: Four members of Volga UMC attended the Northeast District gathering tonight. They were recognized as one of only two churches on the district that livestream their Sunday service. But there is more! The village of Volga has a population of only 200, with 46 members and an average of 15 in worship. 15 – 20 more households watch the livestream as well as people from England, Ireland, and Russia. When it comes to the work of God, there is no such thing as little! Thank you, Volga UMC!

For Pastor Dennis, his family and the ministries of our churches.
Wayne Coonfare for healing.

To all who decorated the church so beautifully for Christmas.
To the UMW for once again providing substantial help to the Shepherd of the Hills Christmas for Children Project.
To George for all his good work to transfer our live stream from Sunday Streams to BoxCast.

As always, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please talk with Pastor Dennis or contact a member of the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee.
The 2020 members of the SPPRC are:
