VOLGA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The Volga United Methodist Church is 170 years old this year!  Part of our celebration will be to include a bit of the history of the church in the newsletter each month. These will be taken from the United Methodist Memoirs and Morsels, our UMW cookbook.

Continued:  “The Rev. James Grey Whitford, a superannuate of the Illinois Conference (a retired member of the Illinois Conference), came to the Volga Bottom area and purchased land in sections 8 and 9 of Sperry Township.  He was born at Crown Point, New York, November 8, 1810.  He was left fatherless at the age of six and afterwards, until 20, made his home with Thomas Jewett at Weybridge, Vermont, working on a farm.  At the age of 18 in Middleburg, Vermont, under the ministry of the Rev. John C. Green, Rev. Whitford was converted to God and at once united with the Methodist Church, remaining a consistent and devoted member for more than 70 years.  He early felt the call to the ministry and was deeply interested in the salvation of souls.  In 1830 he received his license to exhort and three years later he received his license to preach in Essex, New York.  At the same time he was recommended by the Quarterly Conference to the Troy Annual Conference for regular work of the itinerant ministry.  His first appointment was the Bridgeport Circuit with the Rev.  Henry Coleman, but Rev. Whitford was obliged to locate (the voluntary termination of a minister’s membership in an Annual Conference) when his health failed.

He decided to come west with his wife, Amanda, and several young children.  In 1837 Rev. Whitford joined the Illinois Conference and had several appointments, one of which was to the Crow Mission among the Chippewa Indians.  He was ordained a deacon on September 15, 1839.  Then Amanda Whitford died.  In 1840 Rev. Whitford married Betsy Leal Sales, who was widowed after only eleven months of wedded life.  On August 29, 1841, Rev. Whitford was ordained an elder by Bishop Morris of Illinois.  Elder Whitford’s health failed again just before he came to the Volga Bottom with Betsy and their growing family.  However, he soon felt better and began to do much for the spiritual wants of the people of both the white and red man.

By 1850 there were twenty registered voters in Sperry Township, which was organized at the election that year.  A log schoolhouse was built on the farm owned by Rev. J.G. Whitford.”

The Volga United Methodist Church is 170 years old this year!  Part of our celebration will be to include a bit of the history of the church in the newsletter each month. These will be taken from the United Methodist Memoirs and Morsels, our UMW cookbook.

Continued:  “In the fall of 1850, the Rev. Stephen Harlan Greenup came to the Volga Bottom charge, which he supplied for a year.  He, in common with the early pioneers of Methodism, met with many accidents and passed through many dangers.  At one time while attempting to cross the Volga River when the water was high, he was carried down the stream where the banks were steep and came near losing his life.  Through a kind Providence, his horse and buggy lodged against a tree, and he succeeded in loosing the horse, which soon made its way to shore.  Rev. Greenup by some means secured the buggy to the tree, then crawling through the tree top to the shore, soon made his way to the hospitable cabin of Rev. J.G. Whitford, thoroughly chilled by his exposure to the water and the cold.

In 1851, the Elkader Circuit was organized from parts of the Colony or Colesburg Circuit and parts of the Garnavillo Circuit, under the name of The Elkader Mission at the beginning of the second quarter of the conference year.  In the fall of 1851, the Rev. Mr. Dennis was appointed to succeed Elder Greenup, but for some cause he remained but a short time.  (To Be Continued

Continued:  “The Quarterly Conference of the Elkader Mission was held January 10, 1852, at which Rev. J.G. Whitford was appointed to succeed Rev. Dennis, and was the first time the work of the Methodist Episcopal Church seems to have been fully organized.  The Rev. Sidney Wood, a local elder in Elkader, was appointed to assist Rev. Whitford.  The Elkader Mission at this time included the following: Elkader, Pony Hollow, Patterson, Cox Creek, Volga Bottom and the Bonham’s Settlement.  The Rev. Henry W. Reed was the presiding elder (now known as district superintendent) at this January conference.  He appointed a committee to estimate the salaries for the remaining three-fourths of the conference year.  Results were that J.G. Whitford was to receive $75.00; Sidney Wood, $50.00; and Presiding Elder Reed, $12.00.  Truly these were the days of small things, and it was well for people of these newly settled regions that ministers could be found owning farms within reach, from which a living could be obtained while they were breaking to the pioneers the bread of life.  In the fall of 1852, the Rev. Isaac Newton came to the charge, the first appointee from the Iowa Conference to the Elkader Mission.  He was born in Bristol, England, in 1816 and was trained and confirmed in the Church of England.  Not being satisfied as to his salvation, he at one time took a whole candle and went into his bedroom, lighted the candle and said he would stay upon his knees until it was burned up, seeking salvation at the hand of the Lord.  Soon the blessing came as a flash of light from the throne.  After his conversion he joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church.  He came to America in 1849 and was received into the Iowa Conference in 1851, so therefore was an original member of the Upper Iowa Conference. By this time, William Gould, Esq. had located the village of Volga and built the first sawmill.  Sometime during 1852, Mr. John Bottom built a small frame store and became the first merchant at Volga City.  He sold dry goods, groceries, hardware and crockery.  (To be continued)
