VOLGA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The Volga United Methodist Church is 170 years old this year! Part of our celebration will be to include a bit of the history of the church in the newsletter each month. These will be taken from the United Methodist Memoirs and Morsels, our UMW cookbook.
Continued: “The law of the church limiting a pastorate to two years was changed at the General Conference of 1864, so Elder Cameron was returned to the Elkader Circuit the third year. His pastorate in Elkader was a time of great family affliction. One of his children died, and his wife was so ill she was confined to her bed a large portion of the time. His three years were years of great care and anxiety as well as years of abundant labors in securing the erection of the Volga City Methodist Episcopal Church. The building of this church formed a new era in the history of this society, it becoming a center for the Methodists of the surrounding region. The Bonham Settlement, Volga Bottom and Hewitt Creek classes were united with the Volga City class, enabling the preacher to serve them at the same time and give them preaching twice every other Sunday. Cox Creek disappeared from the list of appointments of the Elkader Circuit in 1863. Pony Hollow and Patterson disappeared from the list in 1864.
At the close of his pastorate, Rev. Cameron reported 93 members and 6 probationers, and the Volga City church completed with the exception of seating and a church bell. The Annual Conference was held in Tipton, and the Rev. William Cobb was appointed to the Elkader Circuit, which now consisted of four appointments: Elkader, High Prairie, Highland and Volga City.” (To be continued)

We’re Live Streaming Our Worship Services!
Every Sunday, barring unforeseen circumstances, we’re now live-streaming our worship services! We have been live streaming for the past few months and, in addition to Iowa we have viewers in 15 different states and 3 countries. This is a new outreach program for the Volga UMC. It gives us the ability to get the word out to those who cannot attend services for one reason or another. Tell your family, friends and neighbors!
Please try it out! Go to http:sundaystreams.com/go/volgaumc
You may also go to our website: http:volgaumc.org where the Sunday worship service may also be seen live. Additionally, we have a Roku Channel under Volga United Methodist Church where all of the above may be viewed.
Our Sunday services begin at 9:00 a.m. central time if you want to join in for the live stream. This website will also allow you to view the service at a later date.
We are in the early stages of live streaming. It will be helpful if you let us know what you think. We’re always open to suggestions that will make these services better for you. Send an email to volgaumc@gmail.com.
